Things That Have Made Postpartum Life Easier

I’m not sure how this is even possible, but Luna is 6 months old! …am I still considered “postpartum”?! 😉 Ha but seriously… I am, right?!

I’ve received some questions about what it was like to be pregnant again after Teddy died. I spoke some about that in my Instagram stories and saved them to my highlights. They have a rainbow as the label if you’re interested in hearing more about that.

Not only has being pregnant after his death been a challenge, but being postpartum has been difficult, too. And it’s one that I don’t think I’m fully aware of how much it’s still affecting me. Grief is strange like that. We think we’re okay until we’re not.

The first thing I knew I wanted for when Luna was here was an Owlet sock monitor. It basically reads a baby’s oxygen and heart rate levels, much like a pulse oximeter does when you’re in a hospital. Since we don’t know if Teddy’s heart stopped or what happened, this would give me a lot of peace, knowing Luna was being monitored while we were sleeping. I alternate between both feet and make sure I have the correct size on her. We haven’t ever gotten a scary red alarm (they have alarms classified by colors so that way you aren’t unnecessarily shaken up by a false alarm), but we have gotten a yellow and blue alarm. Yellow = fit issue and blue = tech issue (when we moved, we got a blue alarm the first night because the sock battery had been drained from traveling).

Most alarm notifications are because of poor sock placement, so my word of advice is just make sure you have the right size and it’s snug but not tight. The reason I alternate feet is because during my training as a nurse, I learned that we had to rotate the location of the pulse oximeter so that no trauma would occur to the skin. The light from the pulse oximeter itself doesn’t hurt, but it can cause a burn if not moved and left in place for longer than recommended. I’m not sure if this is the company’s suggestion or not, but I personally feel more comfortable switching it up and alternating between her left and right feet every night.

Lollipop Smart Baby Camera

Another thing I’m going to be getting to give me some peace of mind is a Lollipop smart baby camera. I didn’t have a video monitor with my oldest. I was so blissfully at ease in those days. We just had an old audio monitor. Our house at the time was pretty small, so we figured we’d hear him as our rooms were right next to each other, but we had the audio monitor to amplify any sounds. I like the portability of this baby camera and how there are so many ways to mount it. I know Luna is getting pretty “grabby,” so being able to mount it on the wall will be helpful as she grows and develops and wrapping it around the crib no longer works! I’ve read a lot of good reviews and a couple friends have told me good things, so I’m excited to use it with Luna.

Naked Collagen, collagen powder, collagen

Another thing I’ve appreciated this time around, as funny as it sounds, is collagen peptides. I’ve taken them in the past, but it’s been awhile since I’ve taken them regularly. However, for the last month I’ve been taking Naked Collagen every day and I’ve noticed that my postpartum hair loss has slowed significantly and my skin and nails are healthier, too. I do one scoop in my coffee every morning. It don’t taste it at all and I like that it thickens the coffee ever so slightly. It also contains 9 grams of protein per serving! I am especially mindful of protein when I’m pregnant and breastfeeding, so I’m thankful for the extra protein. I highly recommend! Oh and leave a comment below before October 5th and I will randomly pick one of you to win a container of collagen! Tell me what your number one must have item has been for you postpartum, or if you’re a first time mom, what you want the most for after your baby comes.

When my milk supply dips, I also add in this Majka Lactation Booster into my morning coffee. I do one scoop and I’ve found it helps me when I get my monthly cycle (which causes a dip in my milk supply). I’m so thankful for this! I prefer the unsweetened lactation booster to the vanilla chai one. You can use the code “HAPPILYLINDSEY” for 10% off your order. They also have lactation bites that are delicious. You keep them in the fridge and I love them. They’re not too sweet and chock full of milk boosting galactagogues.

infant chair, bouncy chair, postpartum, postpartum necessities, postpartum lifesavers

This bouncy chair has been a lifesaver. I couldn’t decide on whether or not to splurge on the mamaRoo and I’m so glad I didn’t. We got this one for $50 at Target and she has LOVED it! I think it’s lasting us longer than the mamaRoo would have anyway because she can bounce, so there’s the cause and effect factor of “I kick my legs and I move” that she enjoys. Having a safe place to set her down has been very necessary. No matter what type of swing or chair you choose, just know it’ll be used a lot and it’ll be worth it!

lululemon leggings, Align pant, Align pant review, Lululemon quality guarantee

I have lived in my Lululemon leggings and I highly recommend getting a few pairs, no matter what brand they are. I’m actually on my third pair of their Align pant in the last year… pretty sure I got a couple duds, because each one only lasted me 3 months. They’re buttery soft, but I think because of that, you have to be extra careful. Even so, the sales associate assured me that what happened to my leggings, shouldn’t happen. She told me what a lot of other people told me — that theirs had lasted, they’ve had them over a year, and that they weren’t extremely careful with them. So although I was hesitant to get another pair, I’m glad I’m trying them again because they are so freakin soft. And I’m hopeful I just got a couple lemons. Quick note: I’m super careful with them. Barely ever wash them (unless they get dirty, duh!), wash them in cold water and on delicate wash, lay flat to dry. I try to take really good care of them. The only difference this time around is I will only wash them with silky materials (other workout wear) or alone and I will use a lint roller instead of brushing them off with my hands. Other than that, not sure what else I could have done differently. Also, she said that even if they pill again, bring them in for an exchange. They stand by their quality, so even though this happened to me TWICE, she said to BRING THEM IN. Hopefully that never happens to any of you, but if it does, TAKE THEM IN AND GET YOURSELF A NEW PAIR. They stand by their quality and encourage any defects to be replaced. I’m so glad I went to Instagram stories and you all convinced me to take them in! I wasn’t going to because I thought it was me and I was embarrassed. After hearing your feedback, I knew my experience was abnormal and that I should take them in. Something was clearly wrong and they should have the data and I should have leggings that hold up for longer than 3 months!

Those are just a few things that have made my postpartum life easier! I’m sure I’m forgetting something but these were the main things that came to mind when I looked back on what has helped me the most. I hope you found this helpful and if you can think of anyone who would benefit from it, share it with them because sharing is caring!

Girl, you are the best. I love your honesty. My youngest will be 7 next month, and I feel like there is so much more out there now for new moms than what I had, even in just 7 short years. If I had it to do again (I’m good, though. Seriously) I would definitely want the Owlet monitor for peace of mind! Now as I glide into my mid- 30s, I could definitely use the collagen to revamp things as my hormones change. You’re rocking it girl!

Oooo I’ve been searching for a good collagen for awhile to help with my postpartum hair loss so I’m glad you shared this, and I’ve had friends struggling with milk supply so I’ll definitely be passing this info on to some of them! In the beginning my #1 must have items were our snuggleme organic lounger and the Halo brand swaddle my daughter slept SOOO well, I was rarely sleep deprived which was something I was always nervous about. Another must have that’s not really an item but was so necessary for me, SUPPORT… People encouraging me to get out of the house, coming to hangout when the days got long being a SAHM, and just having people to talk to, motherhood can get lonely and I’m lucky that my family is all so supportive and amazing!
